Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and H-Town Mayor Sylvester Turner were on target when they announced yesterday that they would no longer give their annual “state of” addresses in association with the Greater Houston Partnership (GHP).  The GHP is Ok with voter suppression bills at the Texas Legislature.

Here is from Judge Hidalgo:

“We can’t in good conscience stand at the dais of the partnership when their will to represent their members and their community so easily crumbles in a time of need. We do not feel comfortable letting them after seeing them shrink from the civil rights fight of our time.”

Here is from the H-Town Mayor:

“I think it’s important this year for me to find that venue that better reflects the diversity of our city and the values we hold so dear.”

Here is from the Chron E-Board today:

While a coalition of major companies, business executives and local elected leaders have stood up against the latest plot by Texas lawmakers to whittle down voting access, the Houston region’s biggest business group, the Greater Houston Partnership, has taken a stand by refusing to take a stand.

Last I checked, the voter suppressing GHP officed in the same building as Houston First.  If that is a City of H-Town owned building, I expect that voter suppressing GHP to get kicked out. They are a bunch of arseholes in Commentary’s book.  If it is a GHP owned building, Houston First ought to move out ASAP.

Congrats to the GOPers in the Texas Legislature. With the heart beat bill and permitless carry, we are the most extremist state in the USA.

Lifelong newspaperman Bill Hartman is no longer with us. More recently, he was the owner of the Fort Bend Herald.  I remember him when he was associated with the Baytown Sun.  His father was Fred Hartman, who was publisher of the Baytown Sun. The huge bridge on Highway 146 over the Ship Channel, connecting Baytown to La Porte, is named after Fred Hartman.  You know that, though.

One of my all time favorite MLBers is 90 today.  A great ballplayer. Rookie of the Year, two-time MVP, World Series champ, 660 career dingers, 1,903 career RBIs, 3,283 career base hits, and 24 All Star games. Happy Birthday to Hall of Fame great Willie Mays!

Happy Birthday to Jose Altuve! Tuves is 31 today.

While I am at it, Happy Birthday to Sabrina Midkiff!  If I have to tell you who she is, well. Sab is also a huge Astros fan.

Speaking of, let’s root for a win today at noon to avoid a Bronx sweep.
