Preppers

It’s official.  Former Vice President Joe Biden announced last night that a woman would be on the ticket. Sen. Kamala Harris would be Commentary’s pick.

I went to a grocery store Saturday and they didn’t have any of those self-checkout kiosks that you find at Kroger, HEB and Walmart.  The lady checking me out had a I don’t want to be there look on her face.  I don’t blame her.

Toilet paper, canned soup and chicken. I could not find any at around 11 am this past Saturday morning.

I did not know about preppers.  Now I do.  See from this AP story I ran across this past weekend:

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Curt La Haise has put up with plenty of razzing from friends over the years who have called him paranoid for stockpiling an eight-month supply of food in his basement and having enough fuel to power his generator for almost an entire winter.

They’re not laughing anymore amid panic buying that has cleared store shelves across the U.S. and growing fears that the new coronavirus will force many Americans to self-quarantine for weeks in their homes.

“Now my friends are like, ‘What should I do, what should I get?’” said La Haise, who operates a firearms and safety training business near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. “Prepping doesn’t look so bad now.”

For those in the often-mocked “prepper” community, this is quickly becoming their “I told you so” moment. But many are resisting saying that, even if it’s in the back of their minds. What they hope is that they’ll finally be taken seriously and that more people will follow their lead.

Some folks were asking for suggestions on what to watch on TV over the weekend now that a lot of folks are sitting at home and there are no live sports on the flat screen.  I was at my Dad’s yesterday and I saw that some cable station was showing all four episodes of “Lonesome Dove” and that is what we watched.  I had not seen it in years.  Great series for sure.

More closings are coming.  In these uncertain times, all we can do is our part, be responsible, be respectful, and hope for the best.
