This is from the Chron story on the City of H-Town inauguration yesterday:
(Mayor Sylvester) Turner this week nominated District E Councilman Dave Martin as mayor pro-tem and District K Councilwoman Martha Castex-Tatum as vice mayor pro-tem. The council unanimously approved Castex-Taxum, while (Council Member Robert) Gallegos was the lone no vote on Martin.
Gallegos said Martin’s opposition to the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance and support for legislation requiring local governments to assist in enforcing federal immigration law disqualified the councilman from the position.
“In an increasingly diverse city, Councilman Martin has consistently opposed policies and efforts aimed at helping and protecting all Houstonians including the vulnerable and underrepresented,” Gallegos said in a statement.
Hard to argue with CM Gallegos on this one. As you recall, when I mentioned the other day that the Mayor was supporting Martin, I called it interesting.
Last year, State Senator Carol Alvarado paid tribute to the Astros on the Senate Floor, honoring them for the 2017 World Series Championship they brought to H-Town. The Astros delegation at our State Capitol that day included President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jeff Luhnow, then President of Baseball Operations Reid Ryan, and players Will Harris, Tony Kemp and Jake Marisnick
We traded Tony Kemp to the Cubbies last season. We traded Jake Marisnick to the Mets late last year. Will Harris signed a $24 million deal with the Nationals yesterday. Reid Ryan was given a lesser role with the front office. MLB is investigating Jeff Luhnow’s Astros for a sign stealing scheme.
Meanwhile, Sen. Alvarado is now Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus. Way to go, Senator!
I will stop with the Christmas tunes in my ride Sunday evening.
Go Texans!
