Bizarro Politics

Folks know by now that Commentary is not high on a former Vice President Joe Biden campaign for president. I will say it again. I prefer someone younger than Commentary. Then I see this from Politico this morning and I let out a huge sigh. Here is how it starts:

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s top advisers and prominent Democrats outside the Biden campaign have recently revived a long-running debate whether Biden should publicly pledge to serve only one term, with Biden himself signaling to aides that he will serve only a single term.

While the option of making a public pledge remains available, Biden has for now settled on an alternative strategy: quietly indicate that he will almost certainly not run for a second term while declining to make a promise that he and his advisers fear could turn him into a lame duck and sap him of his political capital.

According to four people who regularly talk to Biden, all of whom asked for anonymity to discuss internal campaign matters, it is virtually inconceivable that he will run for re-election in 2024, when he would be the first octogenarian president.

“If Biden is elected,” a prominent adviser to the campaign said, “he’s going to be 82 years old in four years and he won’t be running for reelection.”

The adviser argued that public acknowledgment of that reality could help Biden assuage younger voters, especially on the left, who are unexcited by his candidacy and fear that his nomination would serve as an eight-year roadblock to the next generation of Democrats.

Here is the entire Politico article: https://www.politico.com/news/2019/12/11/biden-single-term-082129.

This is bizarro politics pure and simple and don’t even try to argue with me. This is such a dumbarse strategy and thinking. If they are acknowledging that he is too old to run for reelection, then he is too old to run for president. This is not a winning strategy. This is not a good idea. Please!

The weekend before the 2018 November General Election, Commentary was a guest panelist on Fox 26’s “What’s Your Point”. I was asked by host Greg Groogan what to expect on Election Day 2018. I replied that the big question remaining, would Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and Harris County Commissioner Jack Moran survive their reelections. They didn’t. I was also asked how a Tony Buzbee mayoral candidacy would fare in 2019. I said anyone who holds a fundraiser for Donald Trump at their home would never be elected H-Town Mayor.

The political climate four years ago during the H-Town municipal elections was a whole lot different than the political climate today. Today, it is a highly charged partisan environment. All you have to do is check out the KHOU-TV mayoral runoff poll here: https://www.khou.com/article/news/politics/incumbent-houston-mayor-turner-leads-challenger-buzbee-in-new-khouhouston-public-media-poll/285-7fee6f57-c5fb-424b-b4e2-f0f6a9e922c6.

Called it.

The Texas House Speaker announced a House Select Committee on Statewide Health Care Costs yesterday. My good friend and client State Rep. Christina Morales is one of the eleven appointees. I would say that is a pretty good interim assignment. Congratulations, Rep. Morales!

The Penny Shaw campaign put out a press release yesterday touting endorsements then they put out a statement later in the day retracting the press release. Oh, well.

This is funny and somewhat offensive. SiriusXM has a channel called Holiday Traditions that plays Christmas tunes. They have played on a regular basis a Glenn Miller version of “Jingle Bells” with added lyrics. You can sing the following in place of “dashing through the snow.”

Down in Mexico
We have got no snow
You have got no snow?
Down in Mexico!
Sit around all day
Hear the music play
Every time we sing
Tequila glasses ring
Jingle, jingle, jingle, jingle

On one version, the voice that sings the lyrics has an accent from south of the border. That’s all I have on this.
