Pick Your Gate

Jose Altuve now has 1,449 career base hits as an Astro, putting him in 6th place for career base hits in an Astros uniform. Who is in 5th place?

Recyclegate. Bingate, Greenbingate or Trashgate. Pick it.

The rumors on City of H-Town recycling have been out there for a while. Like glass that is taken to recycling centers is being taken to the landfill. That green bin recycling stuff isn’t being separated and is being trucked to the landfill. It looks like some of this might just be true after all. Really? Does the City’s Solid Waste folks think we are all just a bunch of dimwitted dumbarses. I think they are the dimwitted dumbarses. Folks have video cameras always in their hands these days. Check this from Channel 11:

HOUSTON — Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has asked for what his office calls a “sweeping investigation” into the city’s Solid Waste Management Department.

The action comes as new evidence emerged of city garbage trucks not recycling recyclable materials.

KHOU 11 Investigates caught a city garbage truck, on Earth Day, dumping black garbage bins together with green recyclable bins. A city solid waste spokesperson confirmed the mixed load was sent to the landfill.

Mayor Turner initially blamed the incident on the truck driver who went “afoul of the rules,” but five other current and former solid waste employees said city supervisors often instructed them to do so.

“Supervisors and management were having us mix the loads, and if we refused to do it, then they would write us up,” said a former city worker who asked not to be identified.
That worker, who spent six years driving for the city, said supervisors would only give the order to haul recyclables to the landfill over the phone.

“It wasn’t put over the radio, they refused to put it over the two-way radio,” he said.
The worker said the practice has been going on for several years. He said he first alerted city officials by e-mail in 2015, before Mayor Sylvester Turner took office.

“Lately I have been very upset with the things that I have been seeing with management,” the email stated.

It was addressed to the Director of the Solid Waste Management Department and Houston Mayor’s Office.

“On any given day we are told to mix trash and recycling together.”

The worker signed the e-mail as a “very concerned employee” but said management never responded.

Another former solid waste employee said the supervisors’ directive to take recycling to the landfill was given two to three times each week.

“The taxpayers are getting shortchanged,” the worker said.

Commentary is thinking the head of Solid Waste is a goner – like yesterday. Come on! This is shameful. This is a bigtime breach of trust. We recycle because we think our City’s Solid Waste is going to properly handle our recyclables. I would rather them tell me that we can’t pick up our recyclables for a couple of weeks than lying to us and running it to the landfill. Today is my green bin day and I just have to wonder.

Commentary would prefer that a truly independent party look into this. Not the City and not the City Controller.

Here is what RG tweeted about Cong. Joaquin Castro skipping a race for U.S. Senator:

He’ll probably never again be taken seriously as a potential statewide candidate. You can only step up to the edge of the high dive so many times before everyone boos as you crawl down the ladder.

Here is what Miya Shay tweeted:

Rep @JoaquinCastroTX won’t run for Senate. I guess the folks who have been rounding up endorsements for him can go do something else now.

Here is my take. It was pretty obvious that a whole lot of people wanted him in the race. He just didn’t show any signals that he was running. There is nothing absolutely wrong with wanting to stay in the U.S. House. Democrats control the House. He is on the Intelligence Committee. Maybe he would rather be doing that than spending the next ten months crisscrossing the state meeting with Democratic Party primary voters. He would also be running at the same time his brother is running for President. Now he can spend some time campaigning for his brother. Let’s move on.

It’s on to the Amanda Edwards Watch.

The Chron E-Board doesn’t think we should elect judges the partisan way here in Texas. I don’t agree and I have said it before. Any other way will give the major law firms and wealthy lawyers way too much influence. I would rather have the people making the mistakes and not the law firms and lawyers. Just saying.

Lance Berkman is 5th on the list of career base hits in an Astros uniform with 1,648 of course. I am thinking Altuve will pass him next season.

Commentary has said it before. There are two Astros teams this season. One showed up in our 11 zip win Tuesday night and the other showed up in our 6-2 loss last night.
