Anthony Bourdain is no longer with us. His shows on CNN on Sunday nights were always interesting, informative and entertaining. I learned a lot watching his programs. Very sad news.

Somebody had a better term. Commentary is talking about the thousands of folks Donald Trump claimed went out in their boats to watch Harvey approach. The Harvey sightseers. Here is from a Channel 13 story on the reaction to Trump:

Jeff Lindner with the Harris County Flood Control District tweeted, “With all due respect those storm watchers were actually citizens helping bring their fellow neighbors to safety. Most of them would do the exact same thing again, because that is what we do and what makes us #houstonstrong.”

State Representative Armando Walle shared photos of his neighborhood during the storm. He refutes the president by saying, “I’m sure glad some of those guys just ‘joy riding’ were there to help evacuate my kids. We waded through waist deep water to get to the small boat. Thank you to them.”

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote on Twitter, “The president’s lack of basic understanding of the challenges we faced from Harvey is staggering. We are getting a taste of the frustration our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico must feel.”

Finally, a GOP reaction of sorts. This is from the Chron:

“The people who took their boats into the water during Harvey were not storm-watchers. They were heroes who went toward danger to rescue friends, neighbors, strangers. Texans helping Texans in a time of desperate need,” said Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.

Of course, he is on his way out, but still. It tells you something about the other local and state elected GOPers. They will let Trump disparage us all. Just think about that. More importantly, think about this as the election approaches.

@POTUS floats possibility of pardoning Muhammad Ali https://fxn.ws/2kUsrAa

Why does The Greatest need a pardon?

The tape does exist. See this tweet:

@POTUS on G7: “Russia should be in this meeting. Whether you like it or not and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run. G7 threw Russia out. They should let Russia come back in.”

Trump says he is going to make the National Anthem an issue in this election. That is fine by me. This is from The Hill:

Overall, 58 percent said players who kneel during the anthem are not unpatriotic, compared to 35 percent who said they are, according to the poll.

A little bit of history:

Thirty-one years ago today, Fawn Hall became the most famous secretary in America. On June 8, 1987 Hall testified in the Iran-Contra hearings to helping her boss Lt. Col. Oliver North (now a NRA big cheese) shred documents having to do with the affair, in which senior Reagan administration officials facilitated arm sales to Iran in order to fund the Nicaraguan contras.

Remember when Commentary said this last month about my high school, Ross Sterling High, in Baytown:

I went to Sterling as a freshman when it first opened and next month we are having a reunion for all the students who were part of that first group of students who attended that first year – the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. We didn’t have any seniors because they didn’t want the Lee High School students who were now zoned to Sterling to spend their final year in high school at another school – got it?

The reunion is this weekend. Some folks are showing up. Some never do. I like to go.

Our high school mascot is the Rangers and the first line of our school song is “Rangers stand united.” Now you know.

We won last night and picked up a game on the Red Sox.
