Your Opinion

Remember D-Day. 74 years ago today. Remember.

Chron VP/Editor of Opinion Lisa Falkenberg put this out yesterday:

Houston Chronicle readers, I need your help. In my first two weeks as opinion editor, I’m listening, observing and learning. Your feedback will help me set priorities, make changes, and refrain from fixing what isn’t broken. Tell me, do you read the Chronicle’s opinion section? Why or why not? If you do, what do you like most, and what would you change? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your input!

Commentary reads the opinion section. I don’t mind all points of view if they have their facts correct. Commentary is not a fan of the RNC and DNC talking points. You can spot them a mile away so try to keep them out of the opinion section, please. Thanks.

Texas Monthly has an interesting take on what is going on with the SA Express News. Former SA Mayor Julian Castro called the SA Express News the San Antonio bureau of the Chron. Oh, brother! Here is the story: https://www.texasmonthly.com/news/big-city-small-newspaper/.

Folks need to subscribe to their local newspaper. Just saying.

The H-Town City Council will be voting today on taking a step to bid for the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Here is the Chron story: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Council-to-weigh-resolution-supporting-Houston-12966458.php?utm_campaign=twitter-premium&utm_source=CMS%20Sharing%20Button&utm_medium=social.

The convention would be held at the Toyota Center. I’m Okay with that.

If we do get the convention in 2020, I just hope there isn’t a condition to send the ‘Stros on the road that week. What is the point of having all these folks in town if they don’t get the opportunity to check out The Yard, Jose Altuve, #SpringerDinger, and Carlos Correa?

Speaking of, I will be mildly shocked and surprised if Dems-in-charge ask the Clintons to hit the campaign trail for Dem candidates this fall.  They have been out there in every general election since 1992. I think it is time for them to take a break if you know what I mean. The GOP would love to see them out there though.

Savannah Guthrie of “Today” interviewed actress Mira Sorvino this morning. It is by far the most powerful #MeToo interview I have watched. See it here: https://www.today.com/video/-condor-star-mira-sorvino-on-harvey-weinstein-he-s-raped-many-people-i-love-1249338435784?v=b.

Commentary doesn’t have much to say about not knowing the words to “God Bless America.”

Remember when Commentary put out the last part of Teddy Kennedy’s eulogy of his brother Bobby yesterday and here it is again:

As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and who sought to touch him: ‘Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not.‘”

The reason the last quote is in italics is because Bobby Kennedy was sort of quoting this from the author George Bernard Shaw:

“Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not.”

Now you know.

We all know the best speech Teddy Kennedy ever gave was his “Dream Shall Never Die” speech at the 1980 Democratic National Convention at Madison Square Garden. I was there.

Happy Birthday today to Natalie Morales.

Dallas Keuchel got rocked in the first two innings last night. He also gave up three dingers. It wasn’t pretty. Keuchel now leads MLB with 8 pitching losses. We lost and are now in second place, two games back. Oh, well.
