Just in case you forgot, today is Texas Independence Day.
Today’s is also my late brother Mike’s birthday.
Folks know Commentary grew up in Baytown which is right next to the San Jacinto Monument and Battleground.
Most of the elementary schools in Baytown back then were named after those that were involved in the early days of Texas before and after its independence on March 2, 1836. Stephen F. Austin, James Bowie, David Crockett, Lorenzo DeZavala, Mirabeau B. Lamar, and Ashbel Smith – all are still there. There is one named San Jacinto and there used to be ones for Sam Houston and William Barrett Travis but are no longer there.
When I was in elementary school, guess which school was 100% Latino. You got it, DeZavala.
At about that time, Walt Disney’s “Davy Crockett” with Fess Parker was huge – you know, king of the wild frontier. Then John Wayne’s epic flick “The Alamo” came out. I learned later as I got older that both productions were deeply flawed with historical inaccuracies.
Also around that time, the City of Baytown opened a new library which was located a short bike ride away from our house. I took advantage and started reading up on who were the fellas the schools were named after and about the Texas Revolution. It turns out a lot of what I read back then, bios and such, were kind of simplistic and inaccurate, as I learned later.
If you can, try to learn a little about our quest for independence. Here is one for you. Sam Houston was born on this day back in 1793.
I have to hand it to the Texas Education Agency. They came in and snatched some of our prime pieces of real estate. That’s what happens when we voted no on the HISD proposal this past November. See this from yesterday’s Chron:
The Texas Education Agency has updated its list of properties within the Houston Independent School District boundaries whose school taxes could be sent to a poorer district – in this case, Aldine ISD – under the state’s Robin Hood system of school finance.
The revised list was sent to HISD’s board and superintendent Richard Carranza late last week and includes $8.004 billion worth of the Houston’s highest-valued commercial properties on the district’s tax rolls.
The 82 properties are clustered in three parts of town: downtown, the Galleria area and Greenway Plaza.

We get to do a redo on the HISD vote on May 6.
So all of America now knows that Jeff Sessions is a liar. Commentary doesn’t think the USA is ready to have Russia run the Department of Justice.
Does anyone respect Ted Cruz? The fella is a joke. Check this:
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz sought on Thursday morning to tamp down a growing firestorm around U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, twice calling the issue a “nothingburger” in a television interview.
Like I said, this guy is a joke, or should I say a “nothingsenator.”

I watched part of the debate online. Totally unnecessary and a waste of time. What a tool.
