I am thinking nationally syndicated columnist Ruben Navarrette, Jr. is not a fan of State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte. He kind of put her down a bit in his column yesterday. Here is a sample:

This is a career politician who has been in the Texas Legislature since 1990. And she still needs help from Eva Longoria to inform Latinos that she’s one of them? Among other things, she has sided with teachers unions who oppose education reform over Latino parents who support it. Who has she been working for all this time? Not Latinos. Or they’d know who she is.

Who is Leticia Van de Putte? Vouched for by Eva Longoria and Howard Dean. Funded by a Latino PAC.

Profiled by CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post. Unveiled, with great fanfare, to people she is already supposed to represent.

I’ll play along. Hola, Leticia. Nice to meet you.

Ouch! Here is the entire column: http://www.chron.com/opinion/outlook/article/Navarrette-Van-de-Putte-remains-an-enigma-among-5468438.php.

Now that wasn’t nice. Of course, Sen. Van de Putte isn’t the first Latino or Latina to get criticized by Navarrette. Navarrette kind of thinks Latinos get used by Dems and he lets folks know it. Sometimes he is right. Team Van de Putte isn’t going to win over Navarrette – heck his twitter profile admits he’s a smart arse – so just move on and try to stay out of his sights.

Last Friday the Chron had a slam piece on that Alameel fella running for the U.S. Senate in the Dem primary. It was very unflattering. I tweeted this:

I read Chron piece today on “the endorsed” Dem senate candidate. I am really not looking forward to voting in the Dem runoff. #Skip #It?

I will be voting in the runoff and with two races to vote on I very well may hit none of the above.

How many African American skippers does MLB currently have?

I tweeted these right after the Michael Sam selection on Saturday in the NFL Draft:

#Rams save 31 other #NFLTeams from having to answer why they didn’t pick #MichaelSam. #GLBT #ShowMeState handles business! #MakeTheTeam

“Privileged to be a part of it” says a classy and highly respected #JeffFisher, head coach of the #Rams, to #ESPN on #MichaelSam selection.

Outstanding and emotional #ESPN coverage when #MichaelSam got the call from the #Rams. #GLBT #MustSeeTV #PDA #NiceJobESPN

I was watching live and I have to hand it to ESPN for their coverage. They let the living room scene speak for itself. I got kind of choked up.

The Chron E-Board had another take on the Dome yesterday. This time they want us to put a little make-up on the Dome and keep it on until the 2017 Super Bowl. Here is a part of their take:

Yet calls for preservation are only answered with questions. What should we do with the Dome, and how will we pay for it? Voters rejected the $217 million bond initiative to transform the Dome into an exposition space. With few facts to back up the bond advocates’ revenue numbers, the vote was essentially a call back to the drawing board.

So while the family debates what to do with the Dome, it would not take too much to at least return the structure’s exterior to its glory days in time for the Super Bowl in 2017. The weeks of events preceding the 51st Super Bowl will be as much a celebration of Houston as a party for football fans, and a refurbished Dome could stand once again as a symbol of our city’s history. Paint, power-washing and some historic plaques would turn an eyesore into a monument without busting the budget, and while leaving the Dome available for any future transformations – or demolitions.

The family may bicker, but we should at least put forward a happy face for the rest of the world. Save the fight until after the crowds go home.

I have to disagree with their analysis of the final vote on the Dome. I think the voters said they didn’t want to spend any money on it so it is adios.

The Mariners, Rangers, and ‘Stros have African American skippers of course.

We went 2-5 on the roadie and we still have the lousiest record in MLB. I am sure there will be a lot of Rangers fans at The Yard tonight through Wednesday.
