Longtime popular Harris County Precinct 2 Constable Gary Freeman (a Dem) is not seeking reelection and is retiring.   For the past few months or so those that have been mentioned as candidates to replace Gary include Zerick Guinn, Lee Hernandez, Chris Diaz, Harry Zamora, and Joe Martinez.  This past Friday and out of the blue a fella named Jeff Freeman filed as a Democrat for Constable, Precinct 2 – huh!  The only thing I can figure at this point is the fella is trying to cash in on Constable Freeman’s name.  I have to figure that the Democratic Party Primary voters are a little bit smarter out in Precinct 2.  I wonder if others are involved in getting this fella to file.  Stay tuned on this one.  (FYI:  Joe Martinez is Commentary’s client and Joe filed for the position this past Friday.)

Commentary hates to say this but I told you so when I said that between now and December 15 we would see surprises during the candidate filings and I was right of course.  I’m talking about Dem State Rep. Scott Hochberg announcing that he wouldn’t seek reelection.  There are more surprises to come!

Ann Johnson filed as a Dem in HD 134.  I’ve never heard of her.  I’ve heard of her mom and dad.  She has a long ways to go.

This Hall of Fame great holds the MLB career record for striking out at the plate 2,597 times.  Who am I talking about?

This is what Sen. John McCain said yesterday:

"The enthusiasm on the part of Hispanics for President Obama is dramatically less than it was in 2008 because he has not fulfilled his campaign promises, either. So I view the Hispanic vote up for grabs."

Shut up!  We’re not up for grabs!   We just need to get excited about The President.

I got a mailer Friday from At-Large 5 candidate Jack Christie that included an endorsement from my pal Rusty Hardin.

I got a mailer Saturday from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsing Kristi Thibaut in At-Large 2 and CM Jolanda Jones in At-Large 5.

I also got another robo call from the Thibaut campaign this past weekend.

West Gray surpassed Mendenhall yesterday in early voters – 1,180 t0 1,177.  Fiesta is running a distant third with 750.  Rounding out the top 5 is Bayland with 658 and Palm Center with 655. Mendenhall has hit 37% of its Round 1 Early Vote total.  West Gray has hit 22.9%.  Fiesta is at 24.4%.  Bayland is at 21% and Palm Center is at 28.6%.  Kingwood is at 33.6%.  Acres Homes is at 27.1% and Ripley is at 9.2%.

There are only two more days of Early Voting.

Commentary did a talk show at around 9:20 pm on KPFT Radio last night and folks actually called in.  How about that!

Hall of Fame great Reggie Jackson of course struck out 2,597 times and leads all MLBers in career strikeouts.

In college football-speak, New Year’s Day falls on Monday, January 2 because the NFL owns Sunday, January 1 – got it!  Monday, January 2 is also a federal holiday.  So Coog fans get a consolation prize of sorts because the Coogs get to play in a New Year’s Day bowl – got it!

ManRoid is trying to get a MLB club to let him play this season.  We need help but not him and that’s all I have from The Yard.
