I draw a distinction between living outside a district, and living outside a city or county. That distinction mostly has to do with things like paying the same taxes, and voting in the same elections. To be blunt, I don't have a lot of patience for people who buy homes outside Houston so they don't have to pay Houston property taxes but who still want to tell us how to run things. Get some skin in the game, then we can talk.

On a tangential note, last I checked no one has ever been redistricted out of their city or county. Another distinction that I see between the two.

You're a really interesting read with wider appeal than most partybloggers (on the Dem or GOP side). I don't think your cred on the Left is in dispute, either.

So why the constant TeaBagger vulgarities? Is it possible you just don't know the meaning of the term? If so, here you go: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=teabagging

I think vulgarities don't demean the target so much as the person using the vulgarity. But maybe you disagree. It's certainly your right to use whatever speech you'd like, but I suspect that maybe you just don't realize the nature of the vulgarity you've been throwing around so cavalierly for so long.

I'm not surprised by the vulgarities from the Lesser Left, but it's always a little jarring coming from you.

We had a vote. The outcome was not ambiguous.

In banana republics, losers sometimes schedule themselves a do-over. We don't need that practice here.

If it winds up costing the city money to respect the will of the voters, folks need look no further than Bill White, who tightened up the contract language when he thought the lege might try to take away his revenue stream. Sometimes, being a too-clever pol comes back to bite you. Or all Houston taxpayers, as the case may be.

I'm open to the idea that the level of Hispanic organization on the Council redistricting question has been a step forward. I was at the hearing last night, and while I remain unconvinced of a broad community awareness on the matter, I felt that some of the people speaking truly felt they were part of something. That has value in itself if the people willing to do the work and speak up are further motivated to be part the rightful politcal emergence of Latino folks in our City of Houston.

That said, the skepticism of the gentleman who made the comments that just a few folks are on board can't be discounted. The voting numbers are not there in election after election. I would have like to have seen a packed council chambers of Hispanic Houstonians demanding representation. I think the jury is still out.

What frustrated me most of all though last night was the absence of acknowledgment that politcal power for Hispanics in Houston must be a two way street. Yes--District lines must be fair. But also--People have to come out and vote. I heard a lot of talk last night about what other people should be doing.

Thanks for forum here. While I'm not Hispanic, my four-vowel surname has served the cause of increased Hispanic political power in Houston at least as defined by the census.

** I wonder why they waited so long to put the story online. **

Because they like to offer "exclusive" Sunday content to print customers in the hopes that it will boost circulation.

The problem with this Sunday story is that it covered no real new ground from the stories Texas Watchdog has been doing online, for free, for weeks, nor did it acknowledge that TWIA is already undergoing reforms in part because of the Texas Watchdog reporting.

It was a really weak effort from the Chronicle. I doubt it did much to stop the ongoing decline in print circulation!

950 AM Host Michael Berry asked CM Sullivan how CM Jones got reelected and Sullivan answered in a deadpan sort of tone “Fort Bend County” – huh! Sullivan kind of insinuated that the part of Fort Bend County in H-Town is out of the H-Town mainstream or something like that – huh!

Regarding the above remark, sorry Marc. IMO, it appears that Sullivan got away with a racial tongue-in-cheek remark. I think Sullivan was referring to large number of African-Americans who live in the sections of Ft Bend that can vote in Houston elections.
