At 5 pm today, managers will turn in their starting lineups at home plate, errr that is the filing deadline for a bunch of local races heading into the November 3 elections. H-Town mayoral candidate Peter Brown made it official yesterday again when he filed minus those silly rallies folks have in 100 degree weather when they file. Commentary wouldn’t be surprised if another major player threw his hat into the ring.
In a swan song interview yesterday in the Chron, the former HISD superintendent said the HISD school board should be a hybrid single member district and at-large system. I don’t agree with this. In today’s Chron, former HISD board member Laurie Bricker agreed with the superintendent. Here is what she said: “I think it would bring a nice blend. This is not a criticism of single-member district board members. But they have to be mindful. There is a group that elected them. They have special interests.” Huh! That’s news to me. The folks that HISD school board members represent are special interests for sure – oh, brother!
So far none of the H-Town mayoral candidates are ready to SHOW ME THE BUDGET CUTS!
Speaking of, the City of H-Town is going to throw the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) to the dogs – sort of. First of all, they need to remove the “Care” from BARC because they don’t “Care.” Check out today’s Chron. Maybe this is one instance where they ought to outsource an agency to folks that “Care.”
The Houston Texans backed off and reduced prices on their smaller beers. Scoreboard goes to the fans on this one.
Speaking of dogs, the ‘Stros are having a dog day afternoon on Labor Day. Here is what they sent out yesterday: “Bring man’s best friend to the Astros game on Monday, September 7th, 2009 for Dog Day at Minute Maid Park presented by H-E-B as the Astros take on the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:05 p.m. Just $20 gets a ticket for you and your dog with $10 benefiting the Houston Humane Society. This ticket gets your access to the Barking Room Only section along Conoco Alley and the H-E-B Dog Zone featuring Hill Country Fare dog food! And be sure to join is for the pre-game pooch parade and dog costume contest! The deadline to register is September 3rd so get your tickets now!”
Commentary hears the ‘Stros are going to add extra security to the game that day to make sure the BARC folks don’t get anywhere near The Yard.
We’re not going to reach Cecil Puede’s goal of 90 wins this season because we would have to go 27-3 the rest of the way which is darn near impossible since we still have three left against the Cards and seven against the Phillies – both first place teams – yikes!
Michael Bourn has now reached base in 25 consecutive games. His on-base percentage this year is the most improved of any player in MLB from a year ago.
The ‘Stros sent me a gift certificate yesterday for being loyal – I guess – during our current downturn. They didn’t need to do that but I’ll take it anyway and get me some new gear.
